President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially commissioned the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, highlighting it as a symbol of African resilience and a major step toward Nigeria becoming a global healthcare hub. This event coincided with the announcement that Nigeria has secured over $2.2 billion in health sector commitments through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative launched in December 2023.
The initiative aims to renovate more than 17,000 primary health centers, train 120,000 frontline health workers, and double the national health insurance coverage within three years. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce Nigeria's medical vulnerability and curb medical tourism. The government has also implemented reforms to boost local pharmaceutical production, improve regulatory systems, and expand access to diagnostics.
The AMCE, developed in partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and King’s College Hospital London, features West Africa’s largest stem cell laboratory and plans to expand with a teaching hospital and nursing school. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of infrastructural investments like roads and electricity to support health facilities.
Finance Minister Wale Edun and Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah praised the facility and the initiative as transformational for healthcare in Nigeria and Africa. The government’s plan also includes leveraging private sector investments alongside increased public funding to sustain these reforms, reflecting the administration’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to improve the health and well-being of Nigerians substantially.
In summary, the $2.2 billion commitment represents a bold effort by the Nigerian government to overhaul the health sector through large-scale investment in facilities, workforce training, insurance coverage expansion, and infrastructural support, with the AMCE serving as a flagship project in this transformative agenda.
