President Tinubu visits Saint Lucia ahead of the BRICS summit in Brazil

President Bola Tinubu embarked on a two-nation diplomatic visit starting June 28, 2025, with his first stop being Saint Lucia, where he paid a state visit aimed at deepening Nigeria’s engagement with Caribbean nations and strengthening South-South cooperation. During this visit, President Tinubu made courtesy calls on the Governor-General and the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and addressed a special joint session of the country’s Parliament. He also held a high-level working luncheon with the Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), focusing on economic partnerships, infrastructure development, cultural solidarity, and youth empowerment.

Additionally, President Tinubu visited the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to promote educational ties and academic exchange programs. His visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with Caribbean states, particularly recognizing the African diaspora's role within the African Union’s Sixth Region framework.

Following the engagements in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu proceeded to Brazil to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro from July 6-7, 2025. Nigeria attended the summit as a "partner country," a status that allows more engagement than a guest but is short of full membership. The summit’s theme was “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” concentrating on social, economic, and environmental development. The visit is part of Nigeria’s broader effort to reinforce global partnerships and expand its role in economic diplomacy
