The Nigerian Senate approved a fresh extension of the capital component of the 2024 national budget, moving its implementation deadline to December 31, 2025. This decision, taken during a plenary session on June 23, 2025, came after an amendment bill to the Appropriation Act was quickly passed through first, second, and third readings in a single sitting. The extension aims to allow more time for the full execution of ongoing capital projects under the 2024 budget, preventing their abandonment across the country.
This marks the second time the National Assembly has extended the 2024 capital budget implementation. The first extension shifted the deadline from December 31, 2024, to June 30, 2025, following a formal request from President Bola Tinubu. With this new deadline, Nigeria is now operating two budgets in a single fiscal year: the extended 2024 budget and the already approved 2025 budget.
Senator Solomon Adeola, chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, stressed the need for supporting the extension to ensure infrastructure and other federal projects don't stall. The Senate's move reflects challenges in budget execution capacity by government ministries and agencies, but supporters argue it provides value for money and project completion.
Regarding President Muhammadu Buhari, he visited the funeral prayers of Professor Aminu Ibrahim Lekki, a renowned academic, lawyer, and senior advocate of Nigeria, reflecting on Lekki's legacy and contributions before his passing. The funeral prayers were part of a memorial gathering acknowledging Prof. Lekki's impact on Nigerian legal education and public service.
