The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on six terrorism-related charges. The charges include inciting violence against security agencies, government officials, foreign embassies, and civilians who refused to obey IPOB’s sit-at-home orders in the Southeast.
Kanu also received 20 years for illegally importing a radio transmitter and 5 years for another offence — but all the sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve them together.
Judge Says He Spared Him the Death Penalty
Justice James Omotosho said he would have sentenced Kanu to death due to the severity of the offences but chose life imprisonment “as an act of mercy,” which he said was inspired by a biblical passage.
The judge described Kanu as arrogant, aggressive, and unremorseful throughout the trial and noted that he did not present any defence.
Strict Custody Conditions
Because of the violent nature of the offences, the court ordered that Kanu be kept in protective custody.
He will have no access to digital devices except under strict supervision.
Background
Nnamdi Kanu has been the face of the agitation for Biafra through the outlawed IPOB movement. His broadcasts and sit-at-home directives have been linked to rising tensions and deadly attacks in the Southeast.
What Happens Next?
Kanu has 90 days to file an appeal against the judgment. His legal team is expected to challenge the ruling, which means this case is far from over.
