Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on ECOWAS to sanction countries that manipulate elections in West Africa. Speaking on the issue, Obi pointed out the organization’s double standards, saying it acted quickly to punish Guinea-Bissau after a military coup but remained silent on electoral manipulations caused by technological glitches in other countries.
Obi emphasized that both coups and election disruptions undermine democracy. Citizens must have the freedom to elect their leaders without interference, whether by force or faulty systems. He urged ECOWAS to enforce transparency and accountability to protect the true will of the people.
The call highlights growing concern over electoral integrity in the region and the need for consistent standards from regional bodies to safeguard democratic processes.
